Kayaking on Lake Malawi
Although the kayaks are not always available, kayaking around the lake is one of the main Nkhata Bay attractions. Cruising the peaceful waters between each village, you could spend an entire day travelling the coastline and stopping off at the small coves for a cool drink. Not to mention some shade from the relentless afternoon sun. Kayaking is also a very affordable activity on Lake Malawi which allows you to interact with the locals as the sail past in search of their all-important daily catch.
Volunteering in Nkhata Bay
One of the most popular Nkhata Bay attractions is Malawi Volunteering, spending time in a local community here is entirely worthwhile. Such as the many nearby school projects, medical facilities and local communities who could do with your help. Affordable and highly interesting, this is a great way to experience the Nkhata Bay culture and give something back to Africa.

They call it the lake of stars and it looks simply stunning after dark. But how does it feel to venture out into the darkness and spend the night fishing with a local? This is one of the lesser known Nkhata Bay attractions which is easily organized with a local fisherman. In many cases they will not even ask you for anything in return. Either way, you are sure to enjoy this incredible experience.
Scuba Diving in Nkhata Bay
Did you even know how popular scuba diving in Nkhata Bay is? Lake Malawi is overflowing with fresh water and some very interesting species of fish. In many cases a scuba diving tour in Nkhata Bay will take you out to see some local ship wrecks too, which is a lot different to what you may have experienced while scuba diving in Zanzibar.
Horse Riding in Nkhata Bay
As far as things to do in Nkhata Bay is concerned, Horse riding is possibly the very best. Starting out in a forest, you will travel through some rural landscapes in the local area before finishing on the ever popular Kande Beach nearby where, wait for it, you can swim with the horses.
